That's a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question miss dee ennis and obviously depends on location, the approach you take to the project (architect / main contractor / self-managed with sub-contractors etc.) and the specification & finishes.

If forced to put my neck on the line, I'd say a minimum of £250,000 in the UK for a decent sized barn (2+ bedrooms) in a rural location.

Despite the slumping UK housing market, barns suitable for conversion are a rare commodity these days and so prices are likely to remain pretty consistent.

Like your blog; we went through exactly the same thought processes and eventually went for the heat pump to do UFH and DHW fo our new build house. With the house nearly complete and the system up and running for 6 weeks now, so far so good and no regrets. The house is specified to AECB's Silver standard and the UFH ystem was designed around the heat pump to give a high COP.
Your idea for heating the barn also sounds good, and is pretty well along our train of thought for our next project, the conversion of two old buildings on our farm to holiday lets, to be heated with UFH driven by a large thermal store with inputs from solar and a log boiler.
Good luck!

It's interesting to observe people's love-hate relationships with Basecamp. I personally don't like it. I just didn't reach the goal of making my team more productive with Basecamp. They don't even have due dates for tasks, how am I supposed to track if it is done or not? Now, I'm with Wrike. What I like in Wrike besides due dates, is the email integration. Saves so much time!

I'd love to give it a go, but don't fancy paying for the privilege.

Have you considered going the whole 37 signals way and offering a free version or at least a free trial?

If you need to send project summaries or project wrap-ups to clients from Basecamp, check out http://www.exportreports.com.

Its a new service, currently in beta which allows you to export reports from Basecamp to PDF(with beta pricing starting at $0.99 per report).

If you have any suggestions, let us know! Hope you find it useful.
